  • Aero Club members tour Titan Missile Museum

Six members of the Sun Lakes Aero Club visited the Titan Missile Museum south of Tucson January 28. The facility is a former ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) site. It is the only location in the country where visitors can view an entirely preserved ICBM.

The museum is run by the nonprofit Arizona Aerospace Foundation and includes an inert Titan II missile in the silo as well as the original launch facilities. It was constructed in 1963, at the height of the Cold War, and was deactivated in 1984 along with 70 others throughout the U.S. It remains as one of only two Titan II complexes to survive from the Cold War period.

Making the trip were Dik Cusveller, Paul Beeks, Richard Simmons, Vince Sciberras, Howard Katz and Ken Carpenter.

This field trip was the first conducted by the Aero Club this year. Other future events include a picnic in April.
